An Insight Look into Startup Ecosystem in South East Asia: Opportunities, Challenges and Lesson for Vietnam

Startup has become an intriguing phenomenon that is shaping Southeast Asia’s socio economic landscape and transforming the region into a nourishing greenfield for opportunity seekers. Although the wave of innovative oriented entrepreneurship has been around the corner over the past 20 years, it is still a new concept to this geographical area of Asia. The inconclusive impact of startup in economy, GDP and social development quickly raise awareness to leaders of each participated countries and urge them to put more efforts on building a healthy startup ecosystem. Their efforts have been paid off with several robust outcomes:
Southeast Asia is now home to thousands of million dollars worthy startups, this promising market is gaining more and more attention from inside and outside investors, for the fund pool keeps bein g filled with many lucrative investments. Inevitably, the rising growth rate comes with a pressing need to fully understand Southeast Asia’s st artup e nvironment people needs to know where to invest, how to earn maximum profit or how to avoid unwanted loss. However, with the inadequate maturity level of entrepreneurial market among each countries, different political backgrounds, cultures and languages ; Southeast Asia is a complex, laneous playground where investment traps and chances are hard to distinguish.
With an objective of identifying opportunities and challenges that are existing within SEA market, this dissertation provides a holistic approach of Southeast Asia’s startup community as a whole, later examine the constructional elements, key success factors, opportunities and challenges of Top 6 ASEAN countries and finally, answers for the big question “What can Vietnam learn from other ASEAN startup movements to develop a better ecosphere for startups?”.
