Résumé : |
This paper examines the possibilities of applying Action Learning to the French Hospitality
Industry, and identifies the incentives for and the obstacles to its development in hotels. On the one hand it examines the method itself and its benefits. Action Learning is based on collective thinking and on questions. It is a dynamic and flexible tool that can be applied to a whole range of situations. It is mainly used in the USA, Australia and Japan. The aim of the method is to question continually in order to create a challenging environment and flexible strategies. Secondly, it examines the ins and outs of the hospitality industry: its characteristics, the global trends that influence hotels and the French example of hospitality. This industry is the second largest employer and it is an industry that works every single day of the year. It appeared that hospitality is still a very hierarchical industry that is changing slowly. The main factors of change are IT tools, Corporate Social Responsibility that includes Sustainable Development, the global economy and the ageing demography. Customers habits have changed: they have wide access to information and are more demanding. The guests now are in the habit of sharing their experience and comparing offers before purchasing. This paper contributes to the practice of Action Learning since the application research was conducted by animating Action Learning sessions in two hotels: Saint Jean dAcre in La Rochelle and Sofitel Strasbourg Grande Ile in Strasbourg. The subjects discussed were at a strategic level and involved at least four different departments of the hotel. The study cannot be generalized due to the limited data collected. |
